The University of Béjaïa, founded in October 1983, is a multidisciplinary public establishment. Today it has more than 45,700 students, 1,714 teachers and 1,227 technical and administrative staff.
The University of Béjaïa currently has around thirty research laboratories, approved by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, covering several areas: Modeling and Optimization of Systems - Materials Technology and Process Engineering - Organic Materials - Engineering and the environment - Hydraulics - Industrial and information technology - Electrical engineering - Biomathematics, Biophysics Biochemistry - Applied mathematics - Theoretical physics - Ecology and Environment - Economics and Development - Applied Microbiology - Applied Biochemistry - Training in Applied languages and Language Engineering in a Multilingual Environment - Marine Ecosystems and Aquaculture).
Prof. Abdelaziz Touati received his PhD from the University of Bejaia, Algeria. He then worked as a professor at the Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Bejaia. He was the Director of the Department of Microbiology from 2008 to 2016. He has contributed significantly to the study of antibiotic resistance mechanisms in Algeria, mainly in Gram-negative bacilli. He has published over 90 articles in scientific journals on antibiotic resistance mechanisms, obtaining over 2400 citations and an H-index of 31 (source Scopus, 27 May 2025).
